UniProtKB description: An inverse autotransporter. Adhesin, which mediates attachment to the human intestine epithelial cells. Necessary for the production of attaching and effacing lesions on infected human tissue culture cells. Anchored to the outer membrane by binding to peptidoglycan (PGN) via its periplasmic domain, thus helping in receptor interactions during host invasion (Probable). PGN-binding may also aid in resisting mechanical and chemical stress during transit of the bacterium through the gastrointestinal tract of the host (Probable).
