UniProtKB description:  Catalyzes, via a Pictet-Spengler reaction (PSR), the stereospecific condensation of tryptamine with secologanin to form strictosidine, the key intermediate of indole alkaloid biosynthesis (PubMed:16531499, PubMed:17884630, PubMed:18081287). Also able to use 5-hydroxy-tryptamine (serotonin), 5-fluoro-tryptamine and 6-fluoro-tryptamine, and, to a lesser extent, 6-methyl-tryptamine, 7-methyl-tryptamine, 5,6-dihydroxy-tryptamine and 6-methoxy-tryptamine as substrates (PubMed:16531499, PubMed:17884630).
