UniProtKB description: Cell wall peptidoglycan (PG) DD-endopeptidase, which may act as a substitute for other zinc-dependent PG endopeptidases (ShyA and ShyC) during zinc starvation. Hydrolyzes peptide cross-links which covalently connect adjacent PG strands probably to allow insertion of new glycans and thus cell wall expansion. Degrades purified whole PG sacculi in vitro. It is unclear how it is able to function in low zinc environments, but that may possibly be due to binding zinc with very high affinity, utilizing an alternative metal cofactor or that it may function independently of a bound metal cofactor.
